Flask of Vanilla planifolia with 1 plant to the flask. Can be deflasked between Spring and Autumn, they will however need to be protected over the following winter until they are of a size that will manage normal growing conditions. Vanilla planifolia is a species of vanilla orchid. It is native to Mexico and Belize. It is one of the primary sources for vanilla flavouring, due to its high vanillin content.
In nature, Vanilla vines root in the soil and then clamber up trees producing new aerial roots at each node. Cultivated plants are often potted in a mixture of peat moss and sand, but whatever mix is used, it must have excellent drainage. Vanilla is a heavy, climbing vine that requires a trellis, post, bench, or other sturdy support. A tall wood post or living tree can be used if conditions are right, but plants do not need to be vertical to bloom and produce pods, so they can be grown horizontally along a rafter or the edge of a bench.
